Auto Collision Repair

2 Semesters 6 Credits
Grades 10-11-12

Students will have the opportunity to develop entry level job skills in the auto body collision repair industry. The I-Car curriculum, the industry standard, is followed to teach and evaluate skills such as: dent repair, thin metal welding, priming and paint preparation, paint mixing and spray painting in a down-draft booth, frame straightening, and mechanical repairs. Fiberglass and plastic repairs are incorporated as well.

The I-CAR course curriculum is designed as an orientation to the automotive collision repair industry. Students receive an overview of job possibilities as well as learn various types of automobile construction. Names, uses and maintenance procedures for a variety of tools and equipment are covered. Focuses on general collision repair, refinishing, and shop safety procedures with an emphasis on personal and environmental safety issues. Students also learn the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials. Students experience basic Oxy Acetylene Welding, MIG Welding and both Oxy Fuel and Plasma cutting. Students learn surface preparation, spray gun operation and related equipment, paint mixing, matching and applying, solving paint application problems, finish defects, causes and cure and safety precautions. Advanced students perform structural straightening and measuring, panel replacement and advance refinishing. Students have the opportunity to take and pass ASE tests.
This is a one- or two-year program open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Students may earn a maximum of six credits per year.
Suggested classes to prepare for success in this course are applied math, applied science, and technology education courses.
