Intro Health Sciences

This course introduces students to various aspects of the health care industry. Students have the opportunity to explore a number of health related disciplines, learn associated entry level skills, and compare the educational requirements, credentialing, and job opportunities of each with their personal abilities and interests as a means of making informed career choices.
During the first semester, varied instructional strategies and technologies are used to introduce the student to medical terminology, safety, infection control, patient care procedures, patient rights, ethics, professionalism, and basic anatomy and physiology. Professionals in the local health care industry also visit the class to share their knowledge and experience. The class gains on-site knowledge through field trips to health care facilities in the area as well as visiting post-secondary training campuses.
The course involves a practicum experience in Nurse Aide Training. Students complete the required 105 hours of classroom and clinical training and are prepared to take the state certification exam to become Certified Nursing Assistants.
All students in Health Sciences I are also introduced to the health specific career and technical student youth organization, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).
Prerequisites required: None, however must be able to successfully pass a limited criminal history check before the practicum portion of this class
Highly Recommended: Successful completion of Biology or related High School Science, Algebra I , Computer Applications, English 10; Excellent attendance, work ethic, and attitude.
This course can be a directed elective for Core 40 and an Academic Honors Diploma Elective.
This is a one- or two-year program open to juniors and/or seniors.
Students may earn a maximum of six credits per year.
